The mechanism of ovulation pain.

Ladies, we do a LOT every month. 😂

Our bodies prepare for the possibility of creating a baby, and when that doesn’t happen, we go through another whole process with our period.

Every. Single. Month.

Honestly… our bodies deserve a little applause. 👏

Many women experience some type of pain or discomfort between their periods, especially around ovulation. So today, I want to talk about why ovulation can hurt and why I often hear women say that Visceral Release helps them feel more comfortable during this time.

*Starting in 2027, our signature Intestinal Massage will officially have a new name:

[Visceral Release Massage]

First, what actually happens during ovulation?

Before ovulation, the follicle inside the ovary grows as the egg develops. As the follicle grows, the ovary can become slightly enlarged.

The ovaries are located close to the uterus and the peritoneum—the thin membrane that lines the inside of the abdominal and pelvic cavity.

As the ovary and surrounding tissues change during this process, some women may feel pressure, tension, or discomfort in the lower abdomen or pelvis.

For some women, this discomfort can last for a couple of days while the egg is developing.

And then comes ovulation day.

The egg has matured, and it’s time to leave the follicle.

The follicle ruptures and releases the egg.

Yep… the egg literally has to break through the follicle to make its grand exit. 😳

Just hearing that makes me think,

“Okay, I understand why some of us feel that!” 😂

Our bodies do this incredible process every month. The more I learn about the female body, the more fascinating it becomes.

So why can Visceral Release help?

First, I want to be clear:

Visceral Release doesn’t stop ovulation or remove the cause of ovulation pain.

But it may help make the surrounding area feel more comfortable.

As I mentioned earlier, changes around the ovary during ovulation can contribute to irritation and pressure in the surrounding tissues.

With gentle abdominal and pelvic work, Visceral Release may help relax tension in the abdominal wall, muscles, and surrounding fascia.

When these tissues become less tense, the feeling of tightness or pressure around the pelvis may also decrease.

There’s another part of the story.

When the follicle ruptures and releases the egg, a small amount of follicular fluid—and sometimes a small amount of blood—can enter the pelvic cavity.

This fluid can irritate the peritoneum, the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity, and this irritation can contribute to the pain some women experience during ovulation.

At the same time, the muscles around the pelvis and abdomen may become tense, which can make the discomfort feel even stronger.

Gentle abdominal massage provides soothing touch and may help relax surrounding muscles and tissues. The sensory input from touch may also influence how the nervous system processes pain.

So while we aren’t “massaging the ovary back into place” 😂, we are working with the tissues and nervous system surrounding the area.

And there’s one more piece: circulation.

The hormonal changes around ovulation can make the pelvic and abdominal area feel more sensitive or tense.

Gentle abdominal massage can help relax the surrounding muscles and support local circulation.

When tissues that have been holding tension begin to relax, that heavy, tight, uncomfortable feeling may become easier to manage.

Again, this doesn’t mean Visceral Release changes your hormones or stops ovulation.

Think of it more as supporting your body while it goes through something it already knows how to do.

Your body is doing a LOT.

Ovulation is a normal physiological process, and some women barely notice it.

Others?

They feel every little thing. 😅

If you’re someone who experiences discomfort around ovulation, gentle abdominal work may be one way to help your body feel more relaxed and supported during that time.

Visceral Release is deeper than just “intestinal massage.”

It’s about understanding anatomy, movement, tension, touch, and the relationship between the tissues and the nervous system.

And honestly… the more I study the female body, the more I realize:

The body is pretty amazing.
